TIMES SINGAPORE, BALI – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Epstone, 76, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on 1st October 2024, after a brave and dignified battle with brain cancer, while receiving care in a UK nursing home.
Born on the 11th of October 1948, Robert was raised in a close-knit Jewish family before embracing Buddhism.
Robert enjoyed an eclectic career, ranging from band leader to fashion designer. A charismatic and outgoing individual, he was admired for his vibrant personality and ability to connect with others.
His sociable nature drew many people in. While many were enchanted by his bold style, complete with signature feathers and formerly bare feet, others felt their defences rise, unsure how to engage with someone so unconventional.
Ultimately, he was a colourful character who left a lasting impression on all, widely known in the Bali community.
A passionate advocate for the charitable cause SoleFamily, Robert dedicated much of his time to helping others. In his limited spare moments, he found physical and spiritual inspiration through Buddhist chanting, and enjoyed peaceful walks at the beach with his beloved dog, Cantik. His warm, gentle approach, humour, and incredible life stories will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shelley; two children, Sophie and Ali; and one cherished grandchild, Dylan.
Robert’s legacy of kindness and generosity will live on in the lives he touched and the SoleFamily foundation he established. (*)
