TIMES SINGAPORE, MAKKAH – The Government of Saudi Arabia has announced that the beginning of Zulhijjah 1445 H falls on June 7, 2024. Consequently, the pinnacle of the Hajj 2024 pilgrimage, the standing (wukuf) in Arafah, will be observed on 9 Zulhijjah, corresponding to June 15, 2024.

As the Hajj season approaches, the physical preparedness of pilgrims becomes paramount, especially given the intense physical demands and extreme heat conditions they will face.

Physical and Mental Preparation: A Necessity

Harun Ar Rasyid, the Head of Operations for Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Mina (Armuzna), has emphasized the critical need for pilgrims to prepare both physically and mentally.

The pilgrimage involves a series of physically strenuous activities, including long walks from Arafah to Muzdalifah and Mina, and proceeding to Jamarat to perform the ritual stoning. Such tasks demand optimal physical fitness and mental resilience.

"Our hope is that pilgrims prepare themselves. Maintain physical health and well-being," Harun said. This preparation is vital to ensuring that they can complete the rituals without undue hardship or health complications.

Coping with Extreme Heat

One of the significant challenges faced by pilgrims during Hajj is the extreme heat in Mecca, with temperatures soaring above 43 degrees Celsius. Harun advises pilgrims to use protective gear like hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas to shield themselves from the harsh sun.

"The temperature is similar to previous years; it appears to be very hot," he notes.

The intense heat can lead to severe dehydration, heatstroke, and other heat-related illnesses, making it crucial for pilgrims to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions. Wearing light, breathable clothing and avoiding direct sunlight as much as possible can also help mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures.

Enhanced Facilities and Safety Measures

The Saudi Arabian Hajj Organizing Committee (PPIH) has been diligently preparing to ensure that all necessary facilities are in place for the pilgrims. Various potential challenges have been anticipated and addressed through careful planning.

"We have also prepared scenarios for providing services and protection to our pilgrims by making various anticipatory measures," the guy reassured.

This year, the PPIH has implemented several new measures to enhance the experience and safety of the pilgrims. This includes the 'Murur' overnight stay scheme in Muzdalifah, aimed at ensuring smoother movement and better accommodation for the pilgrims.

Additionally, increased supervision and tighter regulations have been enforced, with strict penalties in place for non-compliance starting from June 2, 2024.

Collaborative Efforts for a Smooth Hajj

The success of the Hajj season heavily relies on the collaboration and solidarity among the organizing bodies, the pilgrims, and the local authorities. Enhanced coordination and comprehensive preparations are pivotal in ensuring that the pilgrimage is carried out smoothly and safely.

"With thorough preparations and adequate facilities, we hope that all Indonesian pilgrims can perform the Hajj rituals well and smoothly," he concluded.

As the peak of the Hajj season draws near, the physical stance and preparedness of pilgrims cannot be overstated. The rigorous activities, combined with the harsh climatic conditions, necessitate that every pilgrim takes proactive steps to maintain their health and well-being.

The concerted efforts by the PPIH and the support provided through enhanced facilities and safety measures aim to facilitate a seamless and fulfilling Hajj 2024 experience. Ultimately, with proper preparation and mindful adherence to the guidelines, pilgrims can undertake their spiritual journey with confidence and devotion.
