TIMES SINGAPORE, JAKARTA – Amidst the onslaught of modern food, there is one traditional snack from West Java that is slowly fading from our memories. Dodongkal, a Sundanese specialty made from rice and brown sugar, is proof of how local wisdom creates a simple yet flavorful dish.

"The tempting sweet taste is like going back to childhood," said a Bandung resident, Nunung, who reminisced about her childhood while enjoying her grandmother's dodongkal.

Dodongkal, often referred to as "Kue Kerucut," comes from the Sundanese tradition. This food is made from steamed rice flour and filled with brown sugar on the inside. The traditional process of making it is often done with a tool called "aseupan," or bamboo steamer, which gives the dodongkal its distinctive aroma.

"Simple, but rich in flavor. This is a culinary heritage that we must preserve," said Mr. Ujang, a dodongkal seller at Cihapit Market, Bandung.

In the past, dodongkal was often served at big events such as celebrations, thanksgivings, and weddings. This snack is not only about taste, but also a symbol of togetherness. People gather to make it, and enjoy the deliciousness created from cooperation and joy.

For those who have never tasted it, dodongkal has a soft texture with a sweet touch of brown sugar that melts in the mouth. The combination of rice flour and brown sugar creates a simple yet satisfying taste.

"It feels like a warm hug on a rainy day," said Tuti, a traditional culinary lover.

Not only does it taste appetizing, the appearance of dodongkal which is shaped like a small cone makes it attractive. Usually, dodongkal is served on banana leaves which provide a natural aroma when enjoyed.

In this modern era, dodongkal is starting to lose out to more popular contemporary snacks. However, for those who enjoy traditional culinary, dodongkal still has a special place in their hearts. Many hope that this special food will not be lost in time.

"The younger generation must know and be proud of foods like dodongkal. Don't let this heritage disappear," Asep, a traditional Sundanese culinary activist.

Several culinary outlets in Bandung have even started to create dodongkal with a more modern appearance without losing its authentic taste.

For the Sundanese people, dodongkal is more than just food. It is a symbol of local wisdom and sweet memories of the past. Every bite of dodongkal seems to bring us back to memories of the warmth of family, togetherness, and simple happiness that we often forget amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life.

If you visit West Java, don't forget to try dodongkal. Although it looks simple, dodongkal contains a wealth of culture and flavor that you won't find in other foods. As the Sundanese proverb says, "Leutik teu ngajangjikeun, tapi ngageunah" It's mean small, unpromising, but truly delicious.(*)
