TIMES SINGAPORE, MALANG – The city of Malang has always been charming for tourists. One area rich in history and charm is Kayutangan Heritage. Located in the heart of Malang, this area offers the beauty of past architecture and a variety of must-visit tourist destinations.
Fitria Nurul Iman, an English Literature student at UIN Malang, also expressed her interest in tourism in this city. As someone who likes to explore exciting places in Malang, Fitria shared her experience when visiting Kayutangan. “Kayutangan has a different atmosphere from other places in Malang. When you set foot there, it's like going back in time,” she said.
History and Charm of Kayutangan
Kayutangan is one of the oldest areas in Malang City. According to the story, Kayutangan means log and hand which refers to a large log used as a signpost in the area. Kayutangan Street is surrounded by authentic historic buildings. Colonial architecture dating back to the Dutch era bears witness to the city's development.
“The buildings along Kayutangan are very unique, which is a special attraction for tourists who like history," Fitria added. One of the buildings that caught her attention was an old house left by Mr Jakoeb in 1920.
Mandatory Destination in Kayutangan
Not only does Kayutangan offer architectural beauty, but it also has several tourist destinations that are worth visiting. One of them is Alun-Alun Malang, which is close to this area. This place is often the center of crowds and entertainment for Malang residents. Besides offering a beautiful atmosphere, Alun Alun Malang is famous for its stunning fountain show.
“Every time I come here, I make sure to visit Alun-Alun. It's not just for relaxing, but there are also many great photo spots,” says Fitria with a smile.
For those who like to shop, along the kayutangan road, many street vendors are offering their wares, from food to handicrafts typical of Malang. “It's very authentic there, and the prices of the goods are still affordable for students,” said Fitria.
Religious Heritage and Culinary Specialities
Not far from Kayutangan, the Cathedral Church of Malang stands majestically. The church, which was founded in the colonial era, has European architecture and is one of the iconic landmarks of Malang City. The church is a place of worship and a religious tourism destination frequented by local and foreign tourists.
“Because of its magnificent design, many tourists come here to take pictures or admire the building,” explains Fitria.
Every trip is complete with sampling the local culinary specialties. Along Kayutangan Street, there are many places to eat that offer a variety of culinary specialties from Malang. One of the places recommended by Fitria is Kayutangan Food Court.
“I really like it here, there are many choices, and the taste and price are still delicious,” she said. Besides Kayutangan Food Court, Bakmi Kayutangan and various coffee shops line the street.
Fitria also advises tourists who want to visit here. “If you want to go culinary in Kayutangan, make sure you have enough cash, because some places still don't use Qris,” she added.
Through areas like Kayutangan, Fitria hopes people will increasingly recognize this destination in other countries. With its charm and uniqueness, Kayutangan Heritage deserves to be one of the main destinations for anyone who wants to explore the beauty of Malang City's history and culture. (*)
