TIMES SINGAPORE, JAKARTAIjen Crater, located on the border of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso, East Java, is famous for its blue fire phenomenon and turquoise crater lake view. However, considering its location in an active volcanic area, tourists must prepare themselves well.

Santuso, a tour guide and jeep rental service provider in Bromo, provides practical guidance to ensure a safe and comfortable trip to Ijen Crater.

Best Time and Things to Prepare for Your Visit

According to Santuso, the dry season (April to October) is the best time to visit Ijen Crater. "The weather tends to be sunny and the hiking trail is safer because it is not slippery due to rain," he explained.

Santuso also suggests that tourists start their hike at midnight so they can reach the peak around 02.00-04.00, when the blue fire phenomenon is clearly visible before the sun rises.

Because Ijen Crater contains high levels of sulfur gas, bringing a gas mask or respirator is a crucial step.  "Ordinary cloth masks are not enough to filter out harmful gases," said Santuso.

In addition, the temperature at the peak is very cold, so it is advisable to wear a thick jacket, gloves, and a hat. Wear trekking shoes with anti-slip soles to deal with rocky and slippery paths.

Climbing to the Ijen Crater requires good stamina because the route is uphill with a length of about 3 kilometers. Santuso recommends warming up before climbing and bringing drinking water, snacks, and personal medicines. He also reminded tourists to bring back their trash in order to preserve the environment.

Follow the Guideliness

"Never ignore the instructions of the guide," said Santuso. Some areas near the crater have high concentrations of toxic gases, which can be dangerous if inhaled. Experienced local guides will help tourists navigate safe paths and provide warnings if conditions become unsafe.

Using a licensed guide ensures that tourists have a safer and more meaningful experience. "The guide will help you understand the geological phenomena of the Ijen Crater and the activities of sulfur miners," explained Santuso.

He also reminded people to choose a trusted agent to ensure safety during the trip.

Santuso emphasized the importance of maintaining ethics and respecting local miners. "They work in extreme conditions, so don't interfere with their activities," he said. Some miners also sell sulfur crafts as souvenirs, and buying them is a form of support for their livelihoods.

Beware of the Dangers of Sulfur Gas

Sulfur gas can be very dangerous, especially when the wind blows towards the hiking trail. "If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or short of breath, immediately move away from the crater," said Santuso.

Therefore, bringing a gas mask and following the guide's instructions are things that cannot be ignored.

Santuso also advised tourists to avoid crowds and choose a time to visit outside the holiday season for a more comfortable experience. "Overcrowding can interfere with safety, especially on narrow trails," he said.

By preparing yourself physically, wearing the right equipment, and following the guide's instructions, you can enjoy your trip to the Ijen Crater safely and comfortably.

Don't forget to keep it clean and respect the sulfur miners as part of a memorable travel experience.Ijen Crater is not just a destination, but also a place to learn to appreciate nature and the people in it. (*)
