TIMES SINGAPORE, JAKARTA – Food is one of the main sources of energy that keeps us going throughout the day. If you are tired of the usual meals like rice or flour-based dishes, a sandwich with various fillings can be a simple yet delicious alternative.

Sandwiches, often known as bread layered with multiple ingredients, are practical to prepare, versatile in taste, and can easily suit different preferences.

The history of sandwiches traces back to England. In the mid-18th century, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who was also a leader in the British Navy, popularized the idea of eating bread filled with meat and vegetables.

Montagu had the habit of eating this kind of bread during his busy hours because it was practical, less messy, and could be eaten while working.

His friends soon noticed this unique eating habit. They started imitating him and eventually adopted the same style. Whenever they ordered food, they would simply say the word “sandwich,” and the servers immediately understood what they wanted.

Over time, this practice became widespread, and the sandwich evolved into a popular dish across many regions of the world.

In its earliest form, the concept of a sandwich was very simple. It’s just slices of bread filled with meat, cheese, or vegetables. The goal was to create a meal that was quick to prepare, easy to carry, and convenient to eat without utensils.

Broader Variety

However, in modern times, sandwiches have developed into a much broader variety. Today, you can find sandwiches with seafood, all-vegetable fillings, or even sweet versions stuffed with jams, spreads, or chocolate.

In terms of serving, sandwiches can generally be divided into two main categories: Hot Sandwiches and Cold Sandwiches. Hot sandwiches are served warm and often involve grilling or toasting. Classic examples include the Cheesesteak Sandwich and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

On the other hand, Cold Sandwiches are usually served fresh and cool, like the Club Sandwich, which is often paired with a warm bowl of soup.

The Nutrition

From a nutritional standpoint, sandwiches can also be a healthy option. The base ingredient bread provides carbohydrates, with each slice containing around 80–120 calories.

When combined with fillings such as grilled or boiled meat for protein and fresh vegetables for vitamins and fiber, sandwiches can easily become a balanced meal. In fact, bread-based meals are often gentler on the digestive system compared to heavier rice-based dishes.

According to health experts from Halodoc, choosing bread with high fiber content, such as whole wheat or sourdough, can further improve digestion and support overall gut health.

This combination of practicality, taste, and nutrition is what makes sandwiches a favorite choice around the world. Whether hot or cold, savory or sweet, sandwiches remain one of the simplest yet most versatile foods you can enjoy anytime. (*)
