TIMES SINGAPORE, JAKARTAParenting is one of the most challenging yet rewarding roles in life, requiring patience, dedication, and love. It involves nurturing and guiding children through various stages of development, helping them grow into responsible, compassionate individuals.

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting, it often requires balancing structure with flexibility, offering both discipline and support. In an ever-evolving world, modern parents also face new challenges, from managing screen time to navigating social pressures.

At its core, effective parenting fosters a healthy environment where children feel safe, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Nila Ainu Ningrum, M. Psi., a local psychiatrist of Kediri shared valuable insights on how mothers can achieve happiness in their roles. The event emphasized practical steps mothers can take to maintain their mental and emotional well-being, despite the challenges of motherhood.

Key for Happy Parenting According to Nila

1. Focus on the Present Moment

Nila encouraged mothers to stay mindful and present in their daily lives. “We should focus on what we are facing, be more mindful, and stay present in the moments we experience each day—whether with our children or partners,” she said. By being present, mothers can build stronger relationships with their families and appreciate the small joys in everyday interactions.

2. Cultivate Gratitude

Gratitude, Nila emphasized, is a vital component of happiness. She advised mothers to practice gratitude regularly by keeping a gratitude journal. This journal helps them reflect on the positive aspects of their lives and acknowledge what they have accomplished.

“A journal of gratitude can help us reflect on what we’ve accomplished so far, making us feel more deserving of happiness,” she explained. Reflecting on even the smallest blessings can boost emotional well-being.

3. Filter Negative Influences

In today’s world, mothers are often exposed to a variety of influences, both in real life and on social media. Nila stressed the importance of filtering out negativity and toxic influences, whether they come from social media or other sources.

“We need to filter what is good for us and ignore what isn’t. That way, we can maintain self-care and self-love,” she said. Avoiding harmful comparisons and focusing on positive interactions is essential for maintaining mental health.

4. Surround Yourself with Positive Communities

Nila also highlighted the significance of being part of a supportive community. Joining positive groups, such as parenting communities, can offer mothers emotional support and encouragement. Being in a nurturing environment helps mothers feel more connected and supported.

“Engaging in activities that bring joy, like joining parenting communities, can be very helpful. Some groups focus on joyful parenting or even Islamic parenting. Surrounding yourself with a positive circle is key to building a happier self,” she said.

5. Practice Self-Care and Self-Love

Lastly, Nila encouraged mothers to make time for self-care and practice self-love. Taking care of oneself is crucial to being able to care for others. Whether through small acts of kindness toward oneself, setting boundaries, or pursuing personal hobbies, these practices help mothers recharge and maintain their mental well-being.

Nila Ainu Ningrum’s talk provided mothers with a roadmap to happiness, emphasizing the power of mindfulness, gratitude, positive communities, and self-care. By adopting these practices, mothers can create a more fulfilling and joyful experience for themselves and their families during parenting moments. (*)
