TIMES SINGAPORE, MAKKAH – The introduction of smart cards, also known as Nusuk cards, has become a pivotal element in managing the logistics of the Hajj 2024 pilgrimage. These cards serve as "entry tickets" that grant access to the key ritual areas of Armuzna (Arafah, Muzdalifah, Mina), ensuring an organized and efficient process for millions of pilgrims.

Importance of Smart Cards

Smart cards streamline the movement of pilgrims, enabling better crowd control and security management. Each card is personalized and linked to the holder’s identification and Hajj itinerary, which helps authorities track and assist pilgrims more effectively.

Distribution and Challenges

Ahead of the Armuzna rituals commencing on June 15, most Indonesian pilgrims have received their smart cards. However, the large crowds and bustling activity, especially around the Masjid al-Haram, have led to a significant number of reported card losses. These incidents are mainly due to the cards detaching from their lanyards or being misplaced amid the dense gatherings.

Addressing the Issues

Subhan Cholid, the Director of Overseas Hajj Services at the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs, has acknowledged the problem and assured that all reported losses are being addressed. Replacement cards are being issued promptly, with a target to complete distributions by June 14.

To minimize the risk of losing these vital cards, Cholid has provided several practical tips. Pilgrims are advised to keep their cards securely in their pockets while attached to the lanyards, rather than letting them hang freely.

Enhanced Security Measures

Given the crowded conditions and potential for unauthorized individuals to target these cards, pilgrims are also encouraged to store their cards in safe places. The smart cards are not just identification tools but also hold critical data for the Hajj journey, making their security paramount.

The adoption of smart cards has significantly enhanced the management and safety of the Hajj 2024 pilgrimage. By following the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, pilgrims can ensure their smart cards remain secure, allowing them to focus on the spiritual aspects of their journey. The commitment of the Ministry to swiftly replace lost cards and provide clear instructions underscores their dedication to a successful and smooth Hajj 2024. (*)
